Baylor Grad Student Travels to Canada and California for Summer Festivals
Kathryn Cederborg had the privilege of performing in two different orchestra festivals. She attended the Fresno Orchestral Summer Academy (FOOSA) in Fresno, California, where she took lessons with Guy Yehuda, and performed Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra and Shostakovich's 7th Symphony at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. She also was one of three clarinetists accepted to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Institute at the University of British Columbia. She took lessons with Jenny Jonquil, played an array of chamber music, and performed Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Shostakovich's 5th Symphony under the baton of Otto Tausk - conductor of the Vancouver Symphony.
BME Majors Help Kids Cultivate a Love for Music at Summer Camp
Megan Green, along with other Baylor BME students, was a cabin counselor at Blue Lake, a fine arts camp in Michigan. Blue Lake is dedicated to the arts, to good people, and to enjoying life. She worked with 10th graders and 7th graders - totaling about 60 kids throughout the summer! She played in the Staff Band with other counselors at the camp, as well as in the Festival Band with faculty coming from across the country. In addition to these roles, she also team-taught the Try A New Woodwind minor course and assisted with the Bernstein Band - a non-competitive group geared toward the lower grade levels.
Baylor Graduate Student Advances to 2nd Round of ICA Orchestral Excerpts Competition
Marissa Stanfill, (graduate, M.M. Performance), was selected as a finalist in the 2019 ICA Orchestral Excerpts Competition this summer.
Performance Major Attends Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival
This summer Talia Dugan attended the Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival in NYC. She had the opportunity to be coached by the Imani Winds members, as well as take lessons and masterclasses with Mark Dover (clarinetist of Imani Winds) and Anton Rist (principal of the Met Opera Orchestra). She learned many things about chamber playing, and was encouraged to play music outside of her comfort zone. Talia's woodwind quintet also performed a gypsy piece called Tzigane by Valerie Coleman, an alum of the Imani Winds.
Baylor Junior Performs at Carnegie Hall
Talia Dugan, junior music performance major, performed at Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall as one of the winners of Baylor's 2018 Semper Pro Musica Competition in the chamber music division. She and fellow student Ben Quarles performed both Mendelssohn Concert Pieces. They are the only two winners from the woodwind division.
Baylor Senior Earns Prestigious Summer Fellowship
Ben Quarles, a senior pursuing a BM in performance, is the recipient of the 2018 Bass Clarinet Tanglewood Music Center Fellowship. This prestigious fellowship is the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer academy for advanced musical study. Quarles is one of only five to be invited into the clarinet fellowship program. He will study alongside students from Julliard, School of Music, Colburn School of Music, University of Southern California and Yale University.
Baylor Junior Becomes Semi-Finalist at Renowned International Competition
In July, Hannah Thorp, a junior music education major, performed as a semi-finalist in the 2018 International Clarinet Association Orchestral Excerpts Solo Competition in Ostend, Belgium. Only six soloists from around the world made it to the semi-finals of the competition.
Baylor Senior Completes Summer Internship
Senior Music Education student Kasey McMurray completed a summer playing at Camp of the Woods, a Christian retreat center in upstate New York, where she played clarinet and saxophone on the full time music staff.
